Partnerships: The Early Years

Inspired by the vision and dedication of a few people who recognized the need for low cost housing for elderly people in the city of Vancouver, The Housing Foundation (HFBC) was incorporated in 1952 under the Societies of B.C. Achieving charitable status in 1953, it was established as the vehicle though which to implement a housing program initiated by a United Way (Community Chest) committee chaired by Dr. Gordon S. Fahrni. The word spread, and began attracting the volunteer support of community services organizations, the first being the Lions Clubs of Vancouver. In those early years, the Lions Ladies Clubs of Vancouver painstakingly crafted thousands of carnations which were then sold by members and friends of the Lions Clubs of Vancouver. Many of you remember purchasing these red and white flowers in remembrance of Mothers' Day.

“Seed” money provided by the Lions Clubs of Vancouver and a partnership with the City of Vancouver, enabled the Foundation to realize their first goal to purchase a three acre site in East Vancouver which would later house 90 suites. Lions View recognizes the monetary and volunteer contributions of the Lions Clubs as well as the view of the majestic Lions Peaks on the North Shore of Burrard Inlet.

Between 1952 and 1977, the Foundation was able to build 10 seniors projects which resulted in 390 units. This accomplishment was made possible by construction grants provided by the Province of British Columbia, long term mortgages from CMHC, and land and money donated by community organizations and individuals.
